Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is a small spiral galaxy located 160 million light years away in the constellation of Perseus at a declination of +42 degrees.  It is a magnitude 14 galaxy which spans 1.2 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 60,000 light years.

From our view perspective, the disk is inclined about 10 degrees from edge-on.

The disk inclination prevents us from having a great view of the disk but some interesting details are still apparent.  The arm structure is odd - bright but fragmented around the core, with 2 parallel bright flocculent-like lines running at about 2 o'clock from the core to the outer disk.  Small star clouds are seen in the ill-defined outer disk, which appears to have star plumes.  The galaxy has been disturbed but the culprit is not obvious.

Although such a galaxy shape is unique in the universe, I have seen a few galaxies that are surprisingly similar to this one.  They include NGC 812 and NGC 6239.
